Diwali is probably the most celebrated fests in India with individuals meeting their near and dear ones, exchanging pleasantries, sweets, lighting candles and putting lights in their home and office. People also enjoy indulging in their favorite past time of bursting numerous crackers.
But this year was actually a totally different story. A really different Diwali actually.
Diwali without crackers? Irresistible. Unbelievable. Unimaginable. Dull and boring indeed. Diwali without crackers meant Diwali without fun and frolic. Diwali without any excitement. Diwali without any festive sentiment.
This is what I felt initially when i first heard about Supreme Court’s announcement on banning crackers in Delhi and Northern Capital Region area on account of high levels of pollution experienced in the last few years.
Since time immemorial, buying number of crackers worth thousands of rupees and lighting them on happy diwali messages has been like a must to get followed ritual, a fervent tradition thus making Diwali an Event most looked toward each year. To increase our nation’s obsession, it seemed to be catching attention and fascination of individuals of varied age brackets in addition to an part of curiosity for growing children.
Lighting crackers is synonymous to being considered auspicious, a good emotion inside our Society. These colorful and glamorous crackers are not only used during Diwali in India but also on all major festivals and celebrations. This can be New Year Celebrations, Guru Nanak Jayanti, Ganpati Festival, Durga Puja, India winning Cricket match, Weddings, Baby Shower etc. In a nutshell, we as Indians only need reasons to light crackers constantly and celebrate the occasion with pomp and show.
Like a lot of my pals, relatives and colleagues, I too felt Diwali will be really boring now lacking the primary fun element. However, I had to modify my prospective if the actual Diwali day approached. To my surprise, I didn’t miss bursting crackers whatsoever because the day progressed.
As always, my entire family had gathered momentum with cleaning rituals. Cleaning of house and household objects was completed each day in advance. Finally, on Diwali day, we all gathered at our parent’s place. Our kids enjoyed munching on sumptuous eatables from morning hours. These included sweets, dry fruits and various tempting delicacies adding the unwanted calories. Greetings and reciprocation on phone calls, sms messages, whats app were accompanied by visiting our neighbors and family friends.
This time, surprisingly, unlike previous Diwali days, we had couple of hours on account of ban. Next, we wondered exactly what do we do and just how should we utilize this idle time constructively?
Celebrating Diwali with not too privileged class of society by making this festival special and memorable on their behalf. So, I along with our kids made a decision to check out a near by school run with a Non-Governmental Organization and then went to an Orphanage. We got few gifts for the children on our way to School and Orphanage. We interacted using the kids and distributed cookies, sweets and cakes to each and every child. We really enjoyed speaking to them and knowing their future goals. It had been a pleasant moment along with a very satisfying experience.
Taking a look at their constant struggles, sorrows and hardships, we felt our life was extremely comfortable, convenient and blessed. Thereafter, I began valuing my entire life and extending gratitude to God and my parents for the wonderful upbringing and beautiful life they have got presented to everyone.
Through the enriching and eye-opening experience, I took a pledge of contributing somehow towards the society immediately especially to those children, who are going to be our next generation. I spoke with their in-charge so that as per their requirements, chose to volunteer and start teaching them English to have an hour at least one time per week. It had been definitely an existence changing and self-realization moment for me personally.
Needless to say, the latter half of the day saw us praying to the deity, lighting lamps and candles. This happy diwali wishes was really different neither expected nor anticipated for. It had been quite meaningful with lot of introspection evhznm together with long-term goal setting without any regrets. Lighting or not lighting crackers actually lost significance after this experience as I achieved a purpose in your life. I felt such as a responsible citizen of this country.
If only I had this self-awakening much earlier in everyday life so that you can contribute positively towards the poor and needy people thereby enhancing their life with right skills and knowledge. And That I am happy to stay in this zone of life. I really hope the enthusiasm continues till I am alive and I’m capable of working effectively towards this goal using a positive mindset and right group of values. This year’s Diwali was certainly quite special, spectacular and amazing and can always remain so inside the years to come. Because of Supreme Court to get a life changing and unique experience. Must say, crackers ban proved to be a boon for the rest of my well being.
